Photo-Taking Tips

  • Place recipe (or other handwritten text) on a flat, well-lit surface with no shadows, on a white background.
  • Shoot camera at close range directly above the center of the recipe, pointing straight down.
  • Ensure lettering is clear (not blurry) & bright.
  • Upload photo in full size in highest resolution (do not crop).

*If lettering is illegible or faint due to wear & tear on the paper, you may use the Trace Method: Print the recipe, hand trace the lettering with black ink, then retake the photo.

**Scanning is preferred if you have access to a scanner.

Formatting-101

With 4 years of experience and over 5,000 Handwritten Recipe Cutting Boards created, we are experts at formatting recipe photos specific to the size and style of our cutting boards. If you have special formatting requests, please note them in the Special Instructions box (available after image is uploaded) with your order. Otherwise, below are a few general guidelines we will use to format your recipe, using our best creative judgement:

  1. If the paper your recipe is written on has lines, we will always attempt to remove them. Unfortunately, we cannot always remove them. If we cannot remove them, we will edit accordingly for best appearance.

2. If the paper your recipe is written on has borders or miscellaneous images, we will always remove them and center the text around them, unless otherwise noted.

3. If lettering is faint in places, this is likely due to faintness, shadows, or inconsistent brightness in the original photo/scan and cannot be improved on our end. Please follow our photo-taking tips for the best quality engraving.

4. We will size your recipe as large as possible on the cutting board while still keeping a "natural" look in the lettering and allowing acceptable margins for the laser engraver around the edges.

5. We will center and enlarge the title of your recipe (when appropriate).

6. We will always format in portrait orientation unless otherwise noted.

*Special formatting requests? Please note them with your order and we will accommodate if possible!
